This product mainly contains alkaloids, the principal components being arecoline, arecaidine, guvacine, guvacoline, arecolidine, homoarecoline, etc. It is also rich in fatty oil, and also contains catechin, leucoanthocyanidin, and saponins, etc.

This product has a strong effect against pork tapeworm, capable of paralyzing the entire worm; against beef tapeworm it can only paralyze the head and immature segments. It also has an expelling and killing effect against pinworms, roundworms, hookworms, flagellates, and Fasciolopsis buski; it has a certain preventive effect against schistosomiasis. The aqueous infusion inhibits dermatophytes and influenza virus. Areca can affect sperm development and cause uterine spasm during pregnancy.
