Can enhance the rhythmic contraction of the isolated ileum of rabbits, inhibit gastric emptying, raise the tension of the circular muscle at the gastric pylorus and lower the tension of the longitudinal muscle at the gastric fundus. Its extract has a marked blood-pressure-lowering effect, and also has certain antitussive and expectorant effects, and can lower serum cholesterol levels and prevent coronary atherosclerosis. The water extract also has antibacterial activity.
