Small St. John's Wort contains tannins, essential oil, hypericin, pseudohypericin, wedelolactone, and demethylwedelolactone, etc.
1. Hemostatic effect: the mouse tail-vein amputation method experiment proves that the extract of this herb 1 g/kg intraperitoneally injected shortens bleeding time; its active components wedelolactone and demethylwedelolactone 0.5 mg/kg intravenously injected shorten bleeding time by 3.9 minutes and 4.2 minutes respectively. 2. Antiallergic effect: otogirin (I) extracted from the root of Small St. John's Wort and otogirone (II) extracted from the flower are both phloroglucinol derivatives with antibacterial action, and also significantly inhibit the contraction of guinea pig tracheal smooth muscle induced by thromboxane A2 (TXA2) and leukotriene D4, suggesting an antiallergic effect.
