Using the test-tube dilution method, the decoction shows inhibitory effects against various pathogenic bacteria, while the alcoholic extract also has some inhibitory effect on Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In isolated intestinal tissues of mice and guinea pigs, small doses are stimulatory, whereas large doses are inhibitory. It also stimulates bronchial smooth muscle in guinea pigs. In addition, it has hypotensive, cardiac-inhibitory, and centrally mediated muscle-relaxant effects.
