The hook-bearing stems, leaves, and twigs contain rhynchophylline, isorhynchophylline, corynoxeine, isocorynoxeine, corynantheine, dihydrocorynantheine, hirsutine, and hirsuteine.

Sedative effect: Intraperitoneal injection of Uncaria decoction in mice produces a marked sedative effect but no obvious hypnotic effect; increasing the dose 25-fold does not enhance the hypnotic or anesthetic effect of sodium pentobarbital; even increasing the dose 50–100-fold does not abolish the righting reflex nor cause motor disturbance, differing from existing hypnotics and sedatives.
