Tall Gastraodia Tuber

The tuber contains vanillyl alcohol (gastrodinol). It also contains p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, succinic acid, and β-sitosterol, etc.

Effect on the nervous system: Intraperitoneal injection of Gastrodiae Rhizoma aqueous preparation in mice prolongs sodium pentobarbital sleep time; it antagonizes pentylenetetrazole-induced clonic convulsions. It is reported that Gastrodia can prevent the violent struggling caused by shearing and antagonize experimental epilepsy. Both Gastrodia and vanillin raise the electroshock convulsion threshold, effectively suppressing epileptiform seizures while controlling the development of epileptiform discharges in the brain.
