Contains volatile oils including thymoquinone, benzyl alcohol, eugenol derivatives, 2-phenylethanol, thymol, 3-hexen-1-ol; leaf oils rich in monoterpenes such as linalool oxide, (E)-β-ocimene, pinene, caryophyllene; inflorescences contain thymol, carvacrol, terpinene and other compounds

Therapeutic Effects

Antimicrobial against dysentery bacillus, Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, typhoid bacillus; relaxes vascular smooth muscle; mild hypotensive effect in rats; enhances macrophage phagocytosis

Precautions

Contraindicated in spontaneous sweating due to exterior deficiency
