Therapeutic Effects

1. Effect on the digestive system: Chinese yam decoction stimulates small intestinal motility and promotes the emptying of intestinal contents; it also markedly antagonizes the tetanic contraction of isolated ileum induced by acetylcholine and barium chloride, can enhance the absorptive function of the small intestine, and inhibits the secretion of serum amylase, while having no marked effect on bile or gastric juice secretion. 2. Hypoglycaemic effect: oral administration of Chinese yam decoction can lower the blood sugar of normal mice and has preventive and therapeutic effects on the alloxan-induced diabetic mouse model, and can markedly counteract the rise in blood sugar in mice induced by exogenous glucose and adrenaline. 3. Effect on the immune system: intraperitoneal injection of Chinese yam decoction can significantly increase the spleen weight of mice without a marked effect on the thymus, and can also significantly enhance carbon particle clearance in mice. Intraperitoneal injection of Chinese yam polysaccharide in mice can effectively counteract the immunosuppressive effect of cyclophosphamide.
