The fruit of Evodia rutaecarpa contains volatile oil, whose main components are evodene, evodol and limonin. The fruit also contains 18 kinds of amino acids including aspartic acid, tryptophan, threonine, serine and cystine.
It has a relatively marked expelling effect on pig roundworms and inhibits Vibrio cholerae, Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum audouinii, and other dermatophytes to varying degrees. Large doses of Wuzhuyu stimulate the central nervous system and may cause visual disturbances and hallucinations.
