What's Inside

Ingredients

The fruit contains volatile oil, organic acids, a methyl glycoside, alkali-soluble resin, non-volatile terpene oil, and saponins. The flower contains fatty oil, volatile oil, sterols, alkaloids, etc. This plant also contains raffinose.

Therapeutic Effects

1. Effect on the cardiovascular system: a chalcone in the psoralea fruit can dilate the coronary vessels of the isolated heart of guinea pigs, rabbits, cats and rats, and can counteract the contractile effect of pituitrin on the coronary arteries. 2. Antibacterial effect: the seed extract of psoralea has an inhibitory effect in test tubes on Staphylococcus and on staphylococci resistant to penicillin and other antibiotics. 3. Treatment of vitiligo and psoriasis: the crude extract of psoralea can treat vitiligo and psoriasis and can be used both topically and orally; its active component is now known to be psoralen, whose toxicity is very low, and only large doses can produce teratogenesis (in experiments on rats and guinea pigs).
