What's Inside

Ingredients

The root and rhizome contain anthraquinones, the main components being chrysophanol and emodin, followed by rhein, physcion, and chrysophanol anthrone, etc. (after stir-frying, rhein is absent).

Therapeutic Effects

1. Blood lipid-lowering effect: when rabbits were fed both Polygonum multiflorum and cholesterol, the atherosclerotic lesions formed were milder than in the control group fed cholesterol alone. In vitro experiments proved that Polygonum multiflorum can combine with cholesterol and reduce the intestinal absorption of cholesterol in rabbits. 2. Blood sugar-lowering effect: after oral administration of the decoction to rabbits, the blood sugar rose to a maximum within 30–60 minutes, then gradually fell, and after 6 hours the blood sugar was 0.03% lower than normal.
