What's Inside

Ingredients

The rhizome of Polygonatum contains mucilage, starch, and sugars; the leaves contain vitexin xyloside and a glycoside of 5,4'-dihydroxyflavone.

Therapeutic Effects

1. Antibacterial effect: Polygonatum sibiricum has an inhibitory effect in test tubes on acid-fast bacteria; its decoction has a significant antibacterial effect on guinea pigs with experimental tuberculosis, whether given at the same time as infection with tubercle bacilli or given after infection when the lymph nodes have become enlarged. It has only a weak inhibitory effect on Bacillus typhi. 2. Antifungal effect: an alcohol-extracted aqueous solution of Polygonatum sibiricum begins to inhibit various fungi, such as Trichophyton violaceum and Epidermophyton rubrum, at concentrations above 2%. 3. Hypotensive effect: both the water extract and the 30% ethanol extract of Polygonatum sibiricum lower the blood pressure of anaesthetized animals.
