Neutral, bitter, slightly pungent
Geranium mainly contains geraniin, gallic acid, succinic acid, quercetin and its glycosides, etc. The leaves contain the most tannins, and the tannin content varies with the season: it is generally lowest from December to February of the following year, then gradually increases, and is highest from June to August.
The decoction strongly inhibits Staphylococcus aureus, group B streptococci, pneumococci, Moraxella catarrhalis, Shigella flexneri, and influenza virus. At certain doses, Laoguancao inhibits intestinal peristalsis and has an antidiarrheal effect; at large doses, however, it promotes intestinal peristalsis and may cause purgation. Its tincture and decoction have marked antitussive effects. Alkaloid constituents of Laoguancao also have antioxidant activity.
