Rhubarb

It mainly contains anthraquinone glycosides and free anthraquinone derivatives, the latter including rhein, emodin, chrysophanol, aloe-emodin and physcion, etc.

Has a purgative effect. After purgation, it shows inhibitory activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, streptococci, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus anthracis, Salmonella Typhi, Salmonella Paratyphi, and Shigella. It also shows inhibitory effects on melanoma, breast cancer, and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma in mice.
