What's Inside

Ingredients

This product mainly contains resin glycosides, the principal components of which are pharbitin, etc. It also contains alkaloids such as chanoclavine, penniclavine, isopenniclavine and elymoclavine, organic acids such as pharbitic acid, and oxidized fatty acids, etc.

Therapeutic Effects

Pharbitin has chemical properties similar to jalapin and has a strong purgative effect. In the intestine, it is decomposed by bile and intestinal fluids to form pharbitic acid, which stimulates the intestinal tract, enhances peristalsis, and causes purgation. Both aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Pharbitis seeds have purgative effects in mice, but these effects are lost after decoction. An aqueous solution from which pharbitin has been removed still appears to have a purgative effect, suggesting that other purgative constituents may also be present.
