Gualouren contains glycosides, saponins, organic acids and their salts (such as calcium oxalate), gums, resins, fatty oil, and pigments, etc.

Therapeutic Effects

1. In vitro experiments show anticancer activity: the enzyme preparation inhibits rectal cancer, colon cancer, choriocarcinoma, and other cancer cells. The alcohol preparation and 20% aqueous decoction inhibit the growth of transplanted mouse sarcoma S180 and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma in animals. 2. A 20% aqueous decoction of whole Gualou and a 60% alcohol extract have a lethal effect on liver-cancer cells in vitro; tested separately, the fruit peel works better than the seed kernel.
