Phlegm-Transforming, Cough-Suppressing and Asthma-Relieving Herbs

Xingren
Slightly Warm; Bitter. Slightly Toxic
Contains amygdalin, fatty oil, protein, and various free amino acids. Amygdalin is hydrolyzed by beta-glucosidases such as amygdalase and prunase in the apricot kernel, successively producing prunasin and mandelonitrile, which further decomposes into benzaldehyde and hydrocyanic acid.
The amygdalin contained in this product can mildly inhibit the respiratory center and thus relieve cough and calm panting; apricot-kernel oil inhibits Ascaris, hookworm, pinworm, Bacillus typhosus, and paratyphoid bacilli, and has a lubricating laxative effect; in addition, amygdalin, benzaldehyde, and hydrocyanic acid have a weak anticancer effect; amygdalin can enhance immunity, but excessive amounts cause poisoning.
