Warm; Pungent. Toxic
All parts of Baimantuoluo (as well as other Datura species) contain alkaloids, but the flower has the highest content, reaching 0.43%; among the alkaloids, scopolamine predominates, followed by hyoscyamine (the order of alkaloid content in leaves is exactly the reverse of that in flowers).
The main effective component of Baimantuoluo flower is scopolamine, which has a marked sedative effect. Ordinary doses make people feel tired and enter dreamless sleep; it can also relieve emotional agitation. Individual patients may develop restlessness, agitation, hallucinations, and even painful depressive and excitatory symptoms. Previously it was only known as a pre-anesthetic medication; now used together with hibernation drugs it produces a strong synergistic effect and is widely applied in traditional Chinese medicine anesthesia. Electrophysiological methods prove that scopolamine inhibits the cerebral cortex and the ascending activating system of the midbrain reticular formation; scopolamine's excitatory effect on the respiratory center, anti-vertigo effect, and therapeutic effect on Parkinson's disease are all stronger than those of atropine.
