Ingredients

The bulb contains peimine (zhebeimu base), peiminine (dehydro-peimine), and peiminol. In addition, there are four trace alkaloids: peimidine, fritimine, peimisine, and peimitidine. A glucoside of peimine was also isolated from Zhebeimu bulbs produced in Japan.

Therapeutic Effects

1. Effect on smooth muscle and glands: peimine at low concentration has a marked dilating effect on bronchial smooth muscle, while at high concentration it significantly contracts it. 2. Effect on the circulatory system and respiration: Zhebeimu alkaloids in large doses lower the blood pressure of dogs, cats, and rabbits and inhibit respiration; in small amounts they slightly raise rabbit blood pressure; perfusion of the isolated frog or rabbit heart causes immediate cessation of heartbeat.
