Benzoin

Contains resin, the main constituents being siamenic acid (Thai resin acid) and coniferyl benzoate. Also contains benzoic acid, cinnamyl benzoate, etc.

Benzoin tincture is an irritant expectorant; inhaled as vapor in hot water, it directly stimulates the respiratory mucosa and increases its secretion; can be used in bronchitis to promote sputum discharge. When inhaling, avoid too high a vapor concentration that would irritate the eyes, nose, and throat. It can also be used externally as a local antiseptic. Generally its compound tincture is used.
