What's Inside

Ingredients

Both the rhizome and leaves contain volatile oil, also containing β-asarone, asarone, caryophyllene, α-humulene, acorin, etc. Also contains amino acids, organic acids, and sugars.

Therapeutic Effects

1. Effect on the central nervous system: Intraperitoneal injection of a decoction of Shichangpu and a defatted decoction markedly reduces spontaneous activity of mice, its main effect being sedation and tranquillization. The volatile oil of Shichangpu significantly prolongs the acute pentetrazol anticonvulsant latency in rats and reduces maximal electroshock convulsions. 2. Inhibition of tracheal contraction: Total volatile oil of Shichangpu at medium concentration (26.5 µg/mL), β-asarone at medium concentration (18.5 µg/mL), and α-asarone at high concentration (24.0 µg/mL) very significantly inhibit spasmodic contraction of the guinea pig trachea, with a clear dose-effect relationship.
