Mainly contains beeswax and resin; a toxic hornet-nest oil has also been isolated.
Therapeutic Effects
The alcohol, ether, and acetone extracts of the hornet's nest all promote blood coagulation, the acetone extract being strongest. All extracts enhance cardiac motion, lower blood pressure, and have a diuretic effect. The volatile oil of the hornet's nest can expel tapeworms, but it is highly toxic and can cause acute nephritis, so it should not be used as an anthelmintic.
