Mainly contains protein. The salivary glands of fresh leeches contain an anticoagulant substance — hirudin.

The water decoction of this product can lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride content, while causing the aortic and coronary plaques to recede, collagen fiber proliferation, and cholesterol crystal reduction. Hirudin not only inhibits the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, but also inhibits the activation of coagulation factors and thrombin-induced platelet reactions, with a very strong anticoagulant effect; it can prevent thrombus formation and dissolve already-formed thrombi. Shuizhi injection can promote the absorption of cerebral and subcutaneous hematomas, reduce surrounding inflammatory reaction and edema, relieve raised intracranial pressure, improve local blood circulation, protect brain tissue, and promote neurological recovery.
