Heat-Clearing Herbs

Grain essence; grain-essence pearl
Neutral; acrid, sweet
The principal constituent is eriocaulin.
The aqueous infusion of Eriocaulon shows varying degrees of inhibition in vitro against Microsporum audouinii, Microsporum ferrugineum, and related fungi. The aqueous infusion of Eriocaulon sexangulare also inhibits dermatophytes such as Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum lanosum, Trichophyton spp., and Microsporum gypseum (by the tube double-dilution method). A 100% decoction of Eriocaulon (species unidentified) has a relatively strong effect against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with an effective concentration of 1:320 (tube method), but weak effects against pneumococci and E. coli.
Use with caution in patients with eye disorders due to blood deficiency. Avoid decocting in iron utensils.
