The leaves contain triterpenoid saponins, including Tetrapanax saponin A₁, B₁, C₁, D, E, F, and G¹⁻³, as well as oleanolic acid 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-α-L-arabinopyranoside and related compounds.

It has antimitotic activity. In addition, this product also has various pharmacological effects such as antibacterial and hemolytic actions. Its derivatives can be made into tablets and injections and used together with various antitumor chemotherapeutic agents in different chemotherapy regimens for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, rectal cancer, and others, with good efficacy.
