The rhizome contains about 6% total saponins, from which six saponins have been identified, namely timosaponin A-I, A-II, A-III, A-IV, B-I, and B-II.

Therapeutic Effects

The extract of this product has an antipyretic effect and can prevent and treat high fever induced by Escherichia coli in rabbits, with a sustained effect. It inhibits platelet aggregation, lowers blood glucose, and has anti-inflammatory, diuretic, expectorant, antibacterial, and anticancer effects. The saponins it contains can significantly reduce the oxygen consumption caused by thyroxine and inhibit Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase activity. It can also regulate the relationship between β-adrenergic receptors and M-cholinergic receptors.

Precautions

Contraindicated in patients with deficiency-cold of the spleen and stomach or loose stools/diarrhea.
