The stems and leaves contain hoyin, a glycoside similar to condurangin; the content in the leaves is 0.76%. They also contain β-sitosterol and fatty oil.

Therapeutic Effects

It contains sitosterol, and animal experiments have shown that sitosterol has marked antitussive and anti-inflammatory effects.

Precautions

It is more effective for cough due to lung heat, but less effective for cough of the deficiency-cold type.
