This product contains ilexin (protocatechuic acid), maslinic acid, protocatechualdehyde, condensed tannins, volatile oil, flavonoid compounds, and other constituents.

The decoction of this product and protocatechuic acid have broad-spectrum antibacterial effects, with the strongest activity against Staphylococcus aureus, and also show certain inhibitory effects against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E. coli, typhoid bacilli, dysentery bacilli, and tubercle bacilli. It can reduce exudation in animals with experimental scald injuries and thus has anti-infective effects. The decoction and protocatechualdehyde can reduce coronary vascular resistance and increase coronary blood flow. It also has anti-inflammatory and antitumor effects.

Use with caution in patients with deficiency-cold of the spleen and stomach.
