Therapeutic Effects

Smilax glabra contains abundant saponins, tannins, resins, and other constituents. It has an antipyretic effect on fever caused by various factors, can increase urinary chloride excretion, and lower blood uric acid levels. It inhibits Staphylococcus aureus, hemolytic streptococci, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, dysentery bacilli, and others. The astilbin it contains has diuretic, analgesic, antitumor, and anti-gossypol-toxicity effects.

Precautions

Use with caution in patients with liver and kidney yin deficiency. Avoid contact with iron utensils, and avoid tea while taking it.
