Peony Root

It mainly contains paeoniflorin, albiflorin, oxypaeoniflorin, paeonon, benzoylpaeoniflorin, paeonin, and related compounds; it also contains gallotannins, volatile oil, proteins, and other constituents.

This product at 0.7–3.3 mg can significantly enhance DNA synthesis in hepatocytes and promote the incorporation of ³H-thymidine into hepatocytes. Its injection or paeoniflorin can directly dilate the coronary arteries and protect against acute myocardial ischemia. The decoction and paeoniflorin can inhibit platelet aggregation and thrombus formation. Paeoniflorin has relatively weak anti-inflammatory activity, and also has analgesic, sedative, antipyretic, anticonvulsant, anti-ulcer, and antihypertensive effects; it can antagonize acetylcholine-induced smooth-muscle spasm.
