The main constituents of the rhizome are filicin; it also contains flavaspidic acid-related phenols, dryocrassic acid, and filicic acid. In addition, it contains volatile oil, filix tannins, fats, resins, and other substances; triterpenoid compounds such as fernene, isofernene-b, adiantone, fernanol, fernanol-29, and hopene are also present.
The decoction of this product shows varying degrees of inhibition against different types of influenza virus and also has certain antibacterial effects. It can paralyze tapeworms, inhibit the activity of whole pig roundworms, and markedly contract the rabbit uterus both in vivo and in vitro. In addition, it has anti-early-pregnancy, antitumor, hemostatic, and hepatoprotective effects.
Not recommended for patients with internal heat due to yin deficiency or deficiency-cold of the spleen and stomach; use with caution during pregnancy.
