Tree Peony Bark

This product mainly contains phenolic compounds, the principal constituents being paeonol and paeonol glycosides; it also contains paeoniflorin, oxypaeoniflorin, benzoylpaeoniflorin, benzoyloxypaeoniflorin, gallic acid, volatile oil, phytosterols, and other constituents.

The decoction of this product shows strong inhibitory effects on Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, and others. Moutan cortex can significantly reduce cardiac output and mildly lower myocardial oxygen consumption. Paeonol and paeoniflorin phenol have anti-platelet aggregation effects; paeonol can inhibit the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in experimental animals and suppress mast-cell degranulation, thus showing anti-allergic effects. Both the decoction and paeonol also have antihypertensive effects.
