The whole herb contains indican, deguelin, dehydrodeguelin, rotenol, rotenone, tephrosin, sumatrol, and histamine. The flavonoid compounds include apigenin, kaempferol, luteolin, quercetin, and indigotinone.

Special note: The root of indigo plant (dàdiàn gēn) and the dye prepared from its leaves (lán diàn) are also used medicinally. The root clears heat, relieves toxicity, and alleviates pain; the indigo dye clears heat and relieves toxicity. Precaution: Use with caution during pregnancy.
