Indian Mockstrawberry Herb

The whole herb contains anthraquinone-related constituents such as methoxy dehydrocholestanol; phenolic constituents such as oligomeric condensed tannins, ellagitannins, gallic acid, and protein-tannin polysaccharides; as well as total proteins and carbohydrates, including hexoses, pentoses, uronic acids, and proteins.

1. Anticancer effect: Oral administration of the aqueous extract of Duchesnea indica inhibits S180 sarcoma, H22 hepatoma, and S37 undifferentiated sarcoma in mice; in vitro it can kill human hepatocellular carcinoma BEL-7721 cells, gastric cancer SGC-7901 cells, and esophageal cancer ECA-109 cells. Its polysaccharide fraction also shows antitumor activity in mice transplanted with S180 sarcoma. The petroleum ether and ether extracts also showed anticancer activity in the brine shrimp bioassay. 2. Antibacterial effect: The saponins in Duchesnea indica can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella species.
