Figwort Root

This product mainly contains iridoids, the principal constituents being harpagide, harpagoside A from Zhejiang Scrophularia, and related compounds; it also contains phenylpropanoid glycosides, volatile oil, phytosterols, alkaloids, and other constituents.

This product has inhibitory effects on a variety of bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhi. Its aqueous infusion or decoction can lower blood pressure; the extract can mildly reduce blood glucose; and the water-soluble solution of its alcohol extract can significantly increase coronary blood flow.
